Priyanka Chopra Biography

A multiple-award-winning Bollywood icon, Priyanka Chopra has starred in dozens of films and fast become one of India’s most celebrated actresses. Now the former Miss World is crossing into the music realm with the release of her forthcoming debut album, a boundary-pushing dance-pop spectacular that announces Chopra as the first Indian musical artist with major mainstream allure.
Released by DesiHits/Interscope Records/2101 Records, Chopra’s debut infuses its seductive mix of pop, hip-hop, and electro with the sublime stylings of both contemporary and classic Indian music. For help in achieving such a sophisticated yet bold blend of East and West, Chopra partnered with leading-edge producers and songwriters like RedOne (Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Pitbull), Brian Kennedy (Rihanna, Brandy, Chris Brown), Bonnie McKee (Katy Perry, Kesha, Britney Spears), and Ester Dean (Beyonce, Lil Wayne, Usher). Recorded in Los Angeles, London, and Ibiza, the album also weaves Indian instrumentation into a beat-driven, melody-soaked soundscape that perfectly captures the global spirit of today’s culture.
“The sound of the album reflects who I am and where I come from—not just India, but all over the world,” says Chopra. As the daughter of two army physicians, Chopra bounced from city to city in her early years and—at age 13—moved to the United States to study Western classical music, theater, and dance. “Because I traveled so much as a child, I grew up with an understanding of many different cultures,” she says. “That’s tremendously influenced my approach to music and opened up my sense of possibility in songwriting and sound.”
A high-passion homage to Chopra’s lifelong globe-hopping, her debut single “In My City” premiered last September on the NFL Network’s Thursday Night Kickoff and sold more than 100,000 copies in its first week of release. With a guest appearance by will.i.am, “In My City” layers Chopra’s sweetly sleek vocals over lush synth tones and brain-bending beats. That pairing of pop prowess and sonic finesse also fuels tracks like “Exotic” (a swinging, sexed-up number featuring dancehall-worthy rhythms and fierce guest vocals by Pitbull) and “Flames” (a club-ready anthem built on pulsing synth and a primal groove). And on the irresistibly frenetic “Erase” (a collaboration with rapidly up-and-coming producer/DJ duo The Chainsmokers), Chopra wraps her taut vocals around lovesick lyrics that match the song’s near-dizzying beats in intensity.
For Chopra (who has appeared in more than 40 movies since making her acting debut in the 2002 Tamil film Thamizhan), the transition from the big screen to the pop scene involved an immense deal of self-discovery. “I go by my instincts when I’m deciding whether or not to take on a movie role, and I used the same instincts in deciding which songs I wanted to be a part of this album,” she says. “In figuring out who I am as a musician, I ended up making about 40 songs.” In that process, Chopra also found herself greatly nurturing her creativity. “What intrigued me most about making music was getting involved in songwriting,” she says. “I’d always written poetry and prose, and to go deeper into writing as a form of self-expression was so exciting for me. In the end the album shows all the different sides of my personality—the workaholic, the mad party girl, the girl who has idealistic notions of what the world should be like. It was really cathartic to get all that down.”
While her earliest ambition was to become an engineer, Chopra has long held an ardent love of music. “Even though my parents are both doctors, they’re very musically inclined,” she says. “My dad sings and loves Indian classical music and my mom’s into everything from The Beatles to The Doors to 50 Cent, so I grew up listening to a really eclectic mix of musical artists.” Chopra’s family also played a key role in the forging of her career path when—in 2000—Chopra’s mother surreptitiously entered her in the annual Miss India pageant. Chopra came in second in the contest, then went on to win the Miss World pageant later that year. “Once I won Miss World, movie offers started coming in and I thought, ‘All right, I’ll give it a shot,’ thinking I could always go back to school,” she says. Chopra ended up winning a Filmfare Best Female Debut Award for 2003’s Andaaz, and in 2008 received a National Film Award for Best Actress for her lead role in the romantic drama Fashion.
In her shift from film to music, Chopra is eager to use her fast-expanding pop-culture reach for the benefit of her homeland. “As a little girl growing up in India, I didn’t feel like there was a place for me in the pop-culture world. I didn’t feel like I belonged,” she says. “It would mean a lot to me to give kids in India—and all over the world—the feeling that there’s a place for anyone and everyone.” Also in the interest of enhancing the lives of children, Chopra serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and is involved in a number of efforts to protect children’s rights and promote the education of girls in India.
A perpetual nomad who now calls Mumbai home—but is quick to point out that she mainly lives “on an airplane”—Chopra says she’s also thrilled to open up the global audience to cultures rarely explored in pop music. “One of my goals is to take something from my home and share it with people who maybe aren’t aware of what India has to offer,” she says. “It’s a way for people to discover new lands.” At the same time, Chopra aspires to help cultivate a deeper connection between those lands. “Like many people today, I don’t feel that I belong to just one part of the world,” she says. “I’m a child of the globe, and my music is about all these different energies converging in a way that’s organic and exciting and very much of the moment.”
